Seventy wonderful colored wood engravings on fifty-five pages. Bound by Monastery Hill-Chicago, stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in. Full black morocco, covers ruled in gilt, upper cover pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, spine with two raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, cream watered silk liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. Housed in the original matching black leatherette slipcase. A very fine copy.
The generic title 'Mother Goose' suggests a few nursery rhyme gems tucked away within.

In just the first few pages: children are whipped soundly and sent to bed, an old man is thrown down the stairs, a pussy cat is drowned, a mouse is bitten in two, a pig is shot with an arrow and children are asked to remember the Fifth of November. Gunpowder treason and plot; I see no reason Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes included, this is a great selection of rhymes. Sometimes collections like this include so many ditties that the book ends up being an encyclopedia that you never want to pick up because of the sheer volume. However, this is a sensible collection, not too long and not too short with enough old favorites and undiscovered treats to keep everyone happy.
Philip Reed's colored wood engravings show our much-loved characters with cherub, pinched faces and the animals full of personality. At the Art Institute he studied the works of such illustrators as Howard Pyle and Randolph Caldecott who would later influence his own work.
In , he established his first printing company, the Broadside Press, and over the next decades Philip Reed gained a reputation using "fine quality work". Most of "his work has been engraved" and Philip Reed worked using "a great deal of color". Bound in a single volume.

Stated First Edition. Contains 52 stories. Condition: Very Good binding. Dust Jacket Condition: Good dust jacket. In the publisher's pictorial paper-covered boards backed in tan cloth. The boards are bright and show little wear.
The dustjacket is present and has quite a bit of shelfwear, especially to the extremities of the spine. The textblock was loose and has been consolidated, and the front hinge has been quite discreetly reglued. The textblock has darkened a bit, with some very scattered foxing. Illustrated in black and white and in color. Ther are no marks in the book. Overall a presentable copy with the dustjacket.
